The Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most popular and scenic paths to the roof of Africa — Mount Kilimanjaro. This 7-day trek offers breathtaking views, diverse landscapes, and a gradual acclimatization profile, making it a top choice for adventurous climbers.

Day 1: Machame Gate (1,800m) – Machame Camp (3,000m)
Drive from Moshi/Arusha to Machame Gate.
Registration and trek through lush rainforest.
Hiking time: 5–6 hours
Dinner and overnight: Machame Camp
Day 2: Machame Camp – Shira Camp (3,840m)
Climb out of the forest and into the moorland zone.
Stunning views of the Shira Plateau and Kibo Peak.
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
Dinner and overnight: Shira Camp
Day 3: Shira Camp – Barranco Camp (3,960m) via Lava Tower (4,630m)
Trek through alpine desert to Lava Tower for acclimatization.
Descend to Barranco Valley.
Hiking time: 6–7 hours
Dinner and overnight: Barranco Camp
Day 4: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (4,035m)
Climb the Barranco Wall — a thrilling but doable scramble.
Continue through valleys and ridges to Karanga Camp.
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
Dinner and overnight: Karanga Camp
Day 5: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (4,640m)
Short trek to Barafu Camp.
Rest and prepare for the midnight summit push.
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
Dinner and overnight: Barafu Camp
Day 6: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Midnight departure for the summit.
Trek in the dark through snow and scree to Stella Point, then on to Uhuru Peak.
After summit photos and celebration, descend to Barafu, then to Mweka Camp.
Hiking time: 12–14 hours
Dinner and overnight: Mweka Camp
Day 7: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate (1,640m) – Arusha/Moshi
Final descent through the rainforest to the gate.
Receive your summit certificates and transfer to hotel.
