The Marangu Route, also known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the only Kilimanjaro route offering hut accommodations instead of tents. This 6-day itinerary includes an extra day for acclimatization, improving your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — Africa’s highest point.
Ideal for first-time climbers, the Marangu Route is direct, scenic, and supported by a professional team of guides, cooks, and porters from Adolita Tanzania Safaris.
Day 1: Marangu Gate (1,860m) – Mandara Hut (2,700m)
Drive from Arusha or Moshi to Marangu Gate for registration.
Trek through rainforest with possible monkey sightings.
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
Dinner and overnight: Mandara Hut
Day 2: Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Ascend through heath and moorland zones.
Stunning views of Mawenzi and the summit cone.
Hiking time: 5–6 hours
Dinner and overnight: Horombo Hut
Day 3: Acclimatization at Horombo Hut
Rest day to aid acclimatization.
Optional hike to Zebra Rocks (4,000m) or explore the area.
Dinner and overnight: Horombo Hut
Day 4: Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut (4,700m)
Trek through alpine desert toward Kibo Hut.
Early dinner and rest for midnight summit attempt.
Hiking time: 5–6 hours
Dinner and overnight: Kibo Hut
Day 5: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Horombo Hut
Start summit push around midnight.
Reach Gilman’s Point (5,681m) and continue to Uhuru Peak.
After reaching the summit, descend to Kibo for lunch, then to Horombo.
Hiking time: 12–14 hours
Dinner and overnight: Horombo Hut
Day 6: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Return to Arusha/Moshi
Final descent through moorland and rainforest.
Receive your summit certificate at the gate and transfer back to your hotel.
Hiking time: 5–6 hours
