Ol Doinyo Lengai, known as the “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language, is an active volcano located in northern Tanzania near Lake Natron. It is the only volcano in the world that erupts natrocarbonatite lava, which is much cooler and more fluid than typical lava.
This climb is challenging due to its steep slopes and nighttime ascent, but it rewards adventurers with stunning views of the Great Rift Valley and a rare opportunity to stand on the rim of an active volcano. Alongside the trek, this trip includes cultural visits and exploration of Lake Natron, home to thousands of flamingos.
Day 1: Arusha – Lake Natron
Drive from Arusha to Lake Natron, with stops along the way for photos and cultural interaction.
Visit Engaresero village and relax by the lake.
Witness the beautiful landscapes and the flamingo breeding grounds.
Dinner and overnight: Natron Camp or similar.
Day 2: Explore Lake Natron & Prepare for Trek
Enjoy a guided walk around Lake Natron, spotting flamingos and other wildlife.
Optional hike to the nearby Ngare Sero Waterfalls.
Early dinner and rest before the midnight climb.
Overnight: Camp near the base of Ol Doinyo Lengai.
Day 3: Midnight Ascent – Ol Doinyo Lengai Summit – Return to Camp
Begin your trek around midnight to reach the summit by sunrise.
The climb is steep and tough but incredibly rewarding.
Enjoy sunrise views from the top before descending.
Return to camp for rest and relaxation.
Overnight: Natron Camp or similar.
Climbing time: 10–12 hours total (ascent & descent)
Day 4: Lake Natron – Return to Arusha
After breakfast, drive back to Arusha with scenic stops along the way.
Drop-off at your hotel or airport.
Transport in 4x4 safari vehicle
Park fees and Ol Doinyo Lengai climb permits
